Overview
The Head of Merchandising is responsible for developing and executing a strong merchandise strategy to drive sales and meet financial targets across omnichannel business in Japan. This role also supports the export of key Japan programs to other regions and collaborates with teams in APAC, EMEA, and the US.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute merchandising strategies for both physical stores and eCommerce.
- Stay ahead of consumer trends to ensure a relevant product assortment.
- Oversee product development, sourcing, pricing, inventory management, and visual merchandising.
- Manage vendor relationships and ensure product quality and integrity.
- Work closely with Marketing, Logistics, eCommerce, and Tech teams to enhance the customer experience.
- Lead cross-functional projects to expand business opportunities.
- Collaborate with global merchandising and sourcing teams to maximize product potential.
- Set and execute a five-year merchandise strategy for long-term growth.
Financial & Operational Management
- Maintain optimal inventory levels and manage markdowns to meet margin targets.
- Achieve annual revenue, sales, and operating income goals.
- Provide regular financial updates and business insights to senior management.
Team Leadership
- Build and lead a high-performing merchandising team.
- Set clear goals, provide coaching, and assess performance.
- Foster a strong, motivated, and adaptable team culture.
Requirements
- 10+ years of merchandising experience in Japan's retail industry.
- Expertise in product development, buying, pricing, and inventory management.
- Strong understanding of the Japanese retail market.
- 5+ years of team management experience in a multinational company.
- Strategic mindset with financial planning and analysis skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and presentation abilities.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
- Fluent in both English and Japanese.
